Job Title: SALT Senior Associate, Sales & Use Tax
Job Responsibilities:
The STS Tax Senior, State and Local Tax, is responsible for leveraging industry knowledge and experience to provide clients with insightful advice related to the tax implications of their business objectives. The role involves recommending alternative courses of action, identifying various methods to comply with tax regulations, and applying knowledge to comprehend potential tax issues. The responsibilities further include evaluating and selecting actions to reduce tax burdens and compliance costs, recognizing and communicating potential risks, and identifying changes in tax policy. The role also entails applying new policies to tax compliance and assisting with routine inquiries from federal or state agencies. As a primary client contact, the position involves preparing and presenting presentations to clients and potential clients.
Research:
- Identifying when research is needed and framing issues for research.
- Analyzing facts and authorities, and reporting the analysis.
- Demonstrating an in-depth understanding of various tax authorities.
- Developing and maintaining relationships with Department of Tax/Department of Revenue personnel.
Tax Compliance:
- Ensuring clients comply with applicable authorities while minimizing their tax and reporting burdens.
- Tracking availability and filing requirements regarding client-related information.
- Utilizing knowledge for accurate and efficient tax compliance.
- Conducting detailed reviews of tax returns and identifying issues throughout engagements.
- Preparing and reviewing taxability matrices for client transactions to ensure timely review and return accuracy.
Tax Consulting:
- Developing, recommending, and implementing methods to maximize client benefits by decreasing current and future taxes.
- Interpreting laws and facts to maximize benefits and involving sub-specialty subject matter experts when appropriate.
- Ensuring compliance with firm policy regarding WTA checklist and developing consultative selling skills.
- Assisting with exam support and managing client expectations.
- Informing leadership of state tax opportunities for clients.
Tax Controversy:
- Reviewing assessment notices and monitoring client expectations regarding controversy issues.
- Handling routine questions from federal or state agencies with assistance.
Tax-Related Software:
- Utilizing tax software and databases for task completion.
- Training staff on current software tools.
Tax Specialization:
- Developing an understanding of technical and practical issues in taxation.
- Managing specialization services efficiently and involving firm specialists when necessary.
- Organizing and conducting internal training sessions in areas of specialization.
Accounting for Income Taxes – SFAS109:
- Reviewing basic tax provisions.
ASC740-10:
- Applying firm policies and standards regarding FAS 109 and FIN 48.
- Assisting others with learning and applying FAS 109 and FIN 48.
- Reviewing tax provisions and communicating with Assurance counterparts for timely tax accrual reviews.
Strategy Development:
- Introducing and developing new or improved ideas to advance client, firm, or personnel positions by reducing taxes or expenses or providing non-tax benefits.
- Reviewing studies of tax implications and offering client alternative actions.
- Assisting with research and implementation of tax strategies.
- Building client relationships, marketing, networking, and business development.
- Providing technical client service to multi-state companies with state and local income/franchise tax issues.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Supervising work assignments of STS SALT Associates.
- Providing periodic performance feedback and participating in annual performance evaluations.
- Acting as a mentor and assisting in the professional development of STS SALT Associates.
Education and Experience Information:
Education:
- Bachelor's degree required.
- Master's degree in Accounting/Taxation or . preferred.
Experience:
- Two or more years of state and local/multistate experience required.
License/Certifications:
- CPA certification or other relevant certification preferred.
Software:
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel and Word, preferred.
- Ability to use standard tax applications and research tools preferred.
