Job Title: Attorney - Litigation
Job Responsibilities:
The Attorney in the Litigation role will be responsible for handling a broad range of civil litigation matters in both State and Federal Courts. Responsibilities include managing cases related to excessive force, wrongful death, deliberate indifference, and other police liability matters, as well as state law tort claims such as trip and fall incidents, road design and maintenance issues, and prosecuting environmental and zoning enforcement matters. The attorney will also defend medical claims, handle condemnation matters, and address other legal issues as necessary. The successful candidate will serve as the lead attorney on assigned cases, collaborate with other attorneys to achieve successful case resolutions, and provide litigation strategies and liability assessments to clients. Additional duties include conducting legal research, analyzing legal issues, drafting reports, status updates, motions, and other court documents, and representing clients in various legal settings including status conferences, oral arguments, and trials.
Education and Experience Information:
Candidates must possess a Juris Doctorate (Professional) degree from an American Bar Association-accredited law school. A minimum of three years of experience in civil litigation is required. The candidate must also have a valid Arizona driver's license upon hire and must be admitted to practice law and be in good standing with the State Bar of Arizona at the time of application.
Additional Qualifications:
Preference may be given to candidates with prior experience practicing law in a government setting, direct civil litigation experience in federal and state courts, and those with bench and jury trial experience. The role requires compliance with continuing legal education requirements and other requirements imposed by the State Bar of Arizona. Effective communication and collaboration skills are essential for providing litigation risk analysis and status reports to various stakeholders.
Salary Information:
The salary range for this position is $80,000 to $160,000 annually. Salary offers are determined based on the candidate's equivalent experience and internal equity with other employees within the same job classification. This position is classified and not eligible for overtime compensation.
Working Conditions:
The Attorney will work in office and courtroom settings within a high-volume, fast-paced environment that may present demanding situations. The role requires long periods of sitting while drafting motions and discovery, as well as standing and moving while litigating cases. The ability to travel to various locations for court appearances, depositions, mediations, settlement conferences, meetings, and trainings is necessary, utilizing personal or county-owned vehicles. The ability to move up to 20 pounds is also required.
