Job Responsibilities
The Law Student Volunteer position with the **Members Only** involves working within the Executive Office for . Trustees and USTP Field Offices. The USTP is a component of the Department of Justice focused on promoting the integrity and efficiency of the bankruptcy system. The program is involved in a range of activities from administrative functions to regulatory and enforcement roles in bankruptcy cases, including chapter 7, 11, and 13 cases.
- Interns in the Office of the General Counsel (OGC) will engage in research and assist attorneys across four specialized legal practice groups: Appellate, Chapter 11, Consumer, and General and Administrative. Tasks include drafting and editing memoranda, USTP guidance and policy papers, court pleadings, and appellate briefs.
- Participation in moot courts to prepare attorneys for trial.
- Work on Ethics, Freedom of Information Act, Privacy Act, Administrative Procedures Act matters.
- Observing Congressional hearings and preparing summaries for senior leadership.
- Field Office Interns will assist attorneys with preparations for bankruptcy court appearances, developing bankruptcy fraud referrals, addressing attorney misconduct, screening cases for debtor abuse of the Bankruptcy Code, reviewing documents in various bankruptcy cases, drafting and filing motions and objections, and monitoring section 341 meetings between debtors and creditors.
- Provide litigation support to attorneys, attend bankruptcy hearings, and 341 meetings.

Education and Experience Information
Candidates must be rising second or third-year law students. The position requires:
- Excellent research and writing skills.

- A desire to work as part of a small team of professionals.
- A commitment to fairness and integrity in the administration of the bankruptcy system.

Interns must generally commit to 10 to 16 hours per week for at least 10 weeks, from September to December, though specific hours will be determined by each office with some flexibility available.

Salary Information
This is an uncompensated student volunteer position. However, academic credit and transit subsidies may be available as specified.
