Job Title: Conflicts Counsel
Job Responsibilities:
The Conflicts Counsel plays a critical role in maintaining the integrity and ethical standards of the law firm by managing and resolving conflicts of interest that may arise due to new business intake or the integration of lateral attorneys. The core responsibilities include:
- Analyzing and resolving potential conflicts for new business intake and incoming lateral attorneys to ensure compliance with ethical standards.
- Training, supervising, and supporting conflicts analysts to enhance their skills and efficiency in identifying and managing conflicts.
- Assisting lawyers in drafting and negotiating conflict waivers with firm clients to facilitate smooth business operations while adhering to ethical guidelines.
- Collaborating with the Director of Legal Talent Management to facilitate conflicts clearance for incoming lateral attorneys, ensuring their seamless integration into the firm.
- Drafting memos to establish ethical screens and monitoring compliance with such screens to uphold ethical practices within the firm.
- Determining when conflicts issues should be escalated for review by the Director of New Business Intake and/or the General Counsel to ensure appropriate resolution.
- Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of current laws and rules pertaining to conflicts of interest in each jurisdiction where the firm maintains an office, ensuring consistent conflicts and ethics practices across all offices.
- Providing additional support in areas as deemed appropriate by the Director and General Counsel, contributing to the overall ethical framework of the firm.
Education and Experience Information:
Candidates for the Conflicts Counsel position should possess the following qualifications:
- A Juris Doctor (JD) degree from a well-regarded law school, alongside a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Admission to a bar in a jurisdiction where the firm has an office in the . is preferred, enhancing the candidate's ability to practice law and address conflicts efficiently.
- At least three years of combined experience as a practicing attorney in a law firm or equivalent experience, coupled with recent law firm compliance experience in a multi-location and multi-office organization. This experience is crucial for understanding the complexities of conflicts management in a large firm setting.
- Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, along with proven analytical and problem-solving skills, which are vital for effectively managing conflicts and advising attorneys on ethical matters.
- Detail-oriented and organized with the ability to effectively multi-task and prioritize workloads, ensuring timely and efficient resolution of conflicts.
- The ability to present ideas in a business-friendly and user-friendly language, and to analyze and process complex material, facilitating clear communication with colleagues and clients.
Salary Information:
The salary for the Conflicts Counsel position at the law firm will vary depending on factors such as relevant experience and skill set. The salary range is one component of the law firm's total compensation package for employees.
