Job Responsibilities
The Assistant Corporation Counsel positions are entry-level roles at the organization, specifically within the Law Department. The primary responsibilities include performing basic legal tasks appropriate to the level of education and experience of the candidates. These tasks involve drafting briefs, pleadings, and motions, conducting legal research, taking depositions, interviewing witnesses, drafting contracts and legislation, and making court and administrative agency appearances.

Depending on the division to which the attorneys are assigned, they may be placed in any division of the Law Department based on the department's needs. The majority of entry-level attorneys will be assigned to the Tort Division, which is responsible for defending the City of New York in personal injury and property damage cases, primarily in State Court.

Within the Tort Division, there are entry-level positions in the Pre-Trial Unit or the State Law Enforcement Defense (SLED) Unit. The Pre-Trial Unit involves handling cases during the discovery phase, attending court for discovery or status conferences, arguing motions, taking and defending depositions, requesting and exchanging discovery, engaging in settlement negotiations, and writing and arguing substantive and procedural motions. Experienced pre-trial attorneys may also serve as a 1st or 2nd chair of a trial in addition to their pre-trial responsibilities.

The SLED Unit involves representing police officers in cases involving claims of misconduct. Attorneys in this unit handle pre-trial matters on a variety of different cases, similar to the responsibilities in the Pre-Trial Unit.

Education and Experience Information
Applicants must have graduated from an ABA-approved law school in December 2023 or in 2024. They must sit for the first available administration of the Uniform Bar Exam, New York Law Exam, and Multi-State Professional Responsibility Exam following graduation or have passed these exams during law school.

As the majority of entry-level attorneys are placed in heavy litigating divisions, the Law Department seeks candidates with experience in moot court, trial advocacy, debate, public speaking, or litigation/mediation clinics or internships. Candidates should be committed to public service, pursuing justice, and serving the common good.

Salary Information
The salary range for the Assistant Corporation Counsel position is $82, to $84,.
