Overview:
The Analyst Series (Law Department) position at New York City Transit involves investigating and resolving personal injury and property damage claims. The incumbent will manage a high-volume caseload, assess liability and damages, prepare written reports, and conduct investigations. Strong computer skills and problem-solving abilities are required for this role. The incumbent will also demonstrate independent initiative and sound judgment, settle claims and suits directly with claimants or their counsel, and may appear in court to aid defense counsel.
Responsibilities:
- Investigate accidents and develop litigation strategies and liability theories to defend against lawsuits brought against MTA and its agencies.
- Review pending cases and prepare reports summarizing the case, liability and damages exposures, reserve recommendations, settlement value, and potential subrogation opportunities.
- Settle claims and suits with claimants and/or their counsel within approved settlement authority limits.
- Consult with management on outstanding discovery for high-exposure cases and assist staff attorneys and outside counsel in obtaining documents.
- Communicate with outside counsel and prepare files for assignment to them.
- Conduct statutory hearings and follow-up investigations on "Quick Response" accidents.
- Appear in court to assist staff attorneys and outside counsel with trial.
Education and Experience:
- Associate Staff Analyst: Master's degree in economics, finance, accounting, business or public administration, human resources management, management science, operations research, organizational behavior, industrial psychology, statistics, personnel administration, labor relations, psychology, sociology, human resources development, political science, urban studies or a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school, and 1 year of professional experience in a related field; or bachelor's degree and 3 years of experience.
- Staff Analyst I & Staff Analyst II: Master's degree in a related field; or bachelor's degree and 2 years of experience; or associate degree or completion of 60 semester credits and 4 years of experience; or high school diploma or equivalent and 6 years of experience.
Desired Skills:
- Ability to assess and prioritize a large volume of work.
- General computer proficiency.
- Computer research proficiency using internet and other computer resources.
- Microsoft Office Suite, including Word and Outlook.
- Excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills.
- Prior claims handling experience strongly desired.
