NJOPD is currently offering internship opportunities for law students at their New Jersey office. The internships are available year-round and provide students with hands-on experience working with attorneys, investigators, and staff to provide top-notch legal representation to clients. The internship program offers real-world experience in assisting with investigations, client communication, research and writing, trial preparation and advocacy, and excellent training and mentorship opportunities.
About NJOPD
NJOPD is dedicated to providing first-class legal representation to indigent individuals at both the trial and appellate levels. Their team of attorneys defends individuals charged with criminal offenses and also represents individuals in cases related to parental representation, law guardian, mental health advocacy, Megan's Law tier classification, and post-conviction relief. They also handle cases related to Recovery Court, Intensive Supervision Program, and have a Forensic Science Unit.
Internships for Law Students
NJOPD is looking for 2Ls and 3Ls to assist their attorneys and staff with case preparation, litigation, and ongoing and/or systemic projects related to the representation of their clients. This includes conducting legal research and analysis, drafting legal documents, assisting with trial preparation, participating in client and witness interviews, and observing and appearing in courtroom proceedings. Students who have completed 2 years of law school may also have the opportunity to appear in court under the supervision of NJOPD attorneys.
How to Apply
Interested students can apply by emailing their cover letter, resume, and writing sample (for law students only) to the Internship Coordinator, Dana Lane, at ****. The cover letter should explain why the student is seeking an internship/externship with NJOPD, their practice area(s) of interest, geographic preference or limitations, and availability including start/end date, number of hours, and schedule.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and must be submitted between June 15th and July 31st for fall internships, October 15th and November 30th for spring internships, and December 15th and April 15th for summer internships. In addition to submitting application materials, all applicants must go through an interview process with the regional office and/or Internship Coordinator, complete confidentiality and ethics paperwork, and be screened and approved before being offered an internship/externship with NJOPD.
Requirements for the Internship Program
To be considered for an internship/externship with NJOPD, students must be currently enrolled in law school and have completed at least 2 years of law school. They must also have a strong interest in public interest law and a commitment to social justice. Candidates must possess excellent research, writing, and communication skills, as well as the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Compensation Information
NJOPD internships/externships are unpaid, but students may be able to receive course credit through their law school. Students should check with their law school's internship/externship program for more information.
