H1: Assistant Attorney General - Tort Litigation
H2: Defend Government Entities in Tort Litigation

The Office of the Utah Attorney General, Litigation Division, is seeking an experienced attorney to join their team as an Assistant Attorney General for Tort Litigation. This position involves defending government entities and their employees in tort litigation in both state and federal courts. The ideal candidate will have 3-5 years of tort litigation experience or prior experience in or a demonstrated interest in tort litigation. However, first or second-year lawyers with relevant experience will also be considered.

The Torts Section of the Litigation Division is highly respected and has been recognized by their peers as among Utah's legal elite. This position also offers the opportunity to work with and learn from experienced attorneys, as two former members of the Torts Section are currently serving as district court judges on the Third Judicial District Court.

The successful candidate will possess excellent written and oral advocacy skills, as well as the ability to manage an existing caseload, draft complex motions, and try both jury and non-jury cases. Prior experience representing governmental entities is preferred. This position also requires current membership in the Utah State Bar and the ability to travel throughout the state for court proceedings.

Responsibilities:
- Conduct legal research and gather evidence in preparation for cases
- Provide consultation and recommendations on legal matters
- Draft correspondence, reports, and other written materials
- Represent the state or employing agency in lawsuits, grievances, and complaints
- Prepare litigation documents and make decisions based on facts and interpretations of law
- Negotiate settlements and represent clients at formal hearings
- May be required to travel and stay overnight

Qualifications:
- Juris Doctorate degree
- Membership in good standing with the Utah State Bar
- Knowledge of legal processes and procedures, as well as civil and criminal justice laws
- Ability to interpret and apply laws and make decisions based on logic and standards
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to deal with people in a professional manner
- Experience with legal research and familiarity with laws governing access to public and private records
- Ability to analyze and interpret legal decisions and stay current with emerging trends
- Knowledge of Fair Labor Standards Act and related employment legislation
- Understanding of judicial and administrative law principles, theories, and practices
