Job Title: Deputy City Attorney

Job Responsibilities:

The Deputy City Attorney is responsible for performing complex professional and administrative legal work, providing legal services, counsel, representation, and regular guidance to various City agencies, departments, boards, and commissions. Key responsibilities include:

- Serving as a legal advisor and counsel to an assigned portfolio of City agencies, departments, and boards.
- Conducting legal research and preparing opinions on regulations and legal matters affecting assigned matters.
- Preparing or reviewing City ordinances, contracts, grant agreements, or other legal documents.
- Reviewing proposed and passed legislation from sessions of the General Assembly.
- Representing the City government, its boards, commissions, officials, and employees in federal, state, and local courts.
- Defending civil litigation brought against the City and its officials, agencies, departments, and employees by evaluating claims, performing research, drafting briefs, and presenting arguments.
- Performing trial duties, including discovery, depositions, trial settlement conferences, and preparing exhibits.
- Responding to subpoena duces tecum requests.
- Providing information and answering inquiries from the public.
- Attending after-hour meetings of boards and commissions to render on-the-spot legal advice.
- Drafting ordinances, resolutions, charter revisions, and other legal documents on behalf of the City.
- Preparing formal legal opinions for the City Attorney's signature.
- Depending on assignment, providing legal review and counsel specific to land use applications, zoning ordinances, and related matters.
- Depending on assignment, representing the Charlottesville Department of Social Services in proceedings.
- Maintaining City equipment, tools, and resources responsibly.
- Ensuring regular and reliable attendance.

Education and Experience:

Candidates may qualify through the following:

- Graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctorate and at least five years of experience in the practice of law.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the specific requirements listed above.
- Preferred qualifications include prior experience in the practice of municipal law and prior litigation experience handling motions and trials in General District and/or Circuit Courts.

Certifications/Licenses/Other Requirements:

- Licensed to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia or eligible for admission under the Rules of the Supreme Court of Virginia Part 1A, Rule 1A:1.
- Successful completion of a pre-employment background check and pre-employment drug screen.

Salary Information:

The preferred hiring range for this position is between $109, and $137, annually. The starting offer is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity. This is a full-time, exempt position with excellent benefits including paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, health insurance options, employer-paid life insurance, retirement options, gym membership reimbursement, tuition reimbursement, and continuing education/training opportunities.
