Job Title: Assistant Corporation Counsel
Job Responsibilities:
The Assistant Corporation Counsel position involves performing basic legal tasks suitable to the level of education and experience of entry-level attorneys. The responsibilities include drafting briefs, pleadings, and motions, conducting legal research, taking depositions, interviewing witnesses, drafting contracts and legislation, and making court and administrative agency appearances. The specific tasks may vary depending on the division within the department to which the attorney is assigned.
The majority of entry-level attorneys will be placed in the Tort Division, which is responsible for defending the City of New York in personal injury and property damage cases, primarily in State Court. Within the Tort Division, there are positions in the Pre-Trial Unit and the State Law Enforcement Defense (SLED) Unit.
Pre-Trial Unit Responsibilities:
- Handle cases during the discovery phase.
- Regularly appear in court for discovery or status conferences and to argue motions.
- Take and defend depositions.
- Request and exchange discovery.
- Engage in settlement negotiations.
- Write and argue substantive and procedural motions.
- Possibly serve as a 1st or 2nd chair of a trial, in addition to pre-trial case responsibilities.
SLED Unit Responsibilities:
- Represent police officers in cases involving claims of misconduct.
- Handle pre-trial matters on a variety of different cases.
Education and Experience Information:
Applicants must have graduated from an ABA-approved law school in December 2023 or will graduate in 2024. Candidates must sit for the first available administration of the Uniform Bar Exam, New York Law Exam, and Multi-State Professional Responsibility Exam following graduation, or have passed these exams during law school.

Salary Information:
The salary range for the Assistant Corporation Counsel position is $82, to $84,.
