Job Title: Agency Attorney Interne
Job Responsibilities:
The Agency Attorney Interne will be part of the **Members Only** (NYCHA) Law Department's Administrative Hearings Division (AHED). This division is responsible for conducting administrative termination of tenancy proceedings initiated on several grounds such as non-desirability, including violence against NYCHA employees, breaches of NYCHA rules and regulations, illegal assignment or transfer of possession of an apartment, and misrepresentation. The division also represents NYCHA in remaining family member and rent grievances brought by public housing residents and Section 8 participants.
Attorneys in this division are expected to:
- Identify key issues in cases quickly and work towards a rapid resolution with supervision and some degree of independent judgment.
- Prepare and litigate administrative hearings and grievances, which includes preparing charges, requesting investigations, negotiating settlements, and representing NYCHA at hearings before an Impartial Hearing Officer.
- Respond to routine inquiries from managers, opposing counsel, and Borough management on assigned cases.
- Conduct legal research on complex cases and prepare memoranda.
- Maintain computer records in the Case Management System and prepare memos and other documents regarding case dispositions.
- Maintain all case files, evidence, and computer files, and prepare memos regarding the progress and disposition of cases.
- Represent NYCHA in Applicant Appeal actions and Small Claims Court actions.
The selected candidate must maintain confidentiality regarding all NYCHA proceedings.
Education and Experience Information:
The minimum qualification for the Agency Attorney Interne position is graduation from an accredited United States law school as defined in the Rules of the New York Court of Appeals (Sections or ) or admission to the New York State Bar.
Preferred Skills:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Litigation experience.
- Knowledge and background in Housing Law, HUD Regulations, Criminal Law, and Criminal Procedure.
- Ability to work independently with minimal direction and be a self-starter.
Salary Information:
The salary range for the Agency Attorney Interne position is $80, to $85,.
