Job Title: Assistant Attorney General V
Job Responsibilities:
- Represents state agencies and officials in lawsuits involving civil rights, retaliation, employment, constitutionality of state statutes, and Americans with Disabilities Act in both state and federal courts.
- Represents the State’s interests in various proceedings not managed by other civil litigation divisions, including lawsuits to vindicate Texas’s sovereign and legal rights.
- Conducts investigations, performs legal research, and prepares complex motions, pleadings, briefs, memoranda, and other legal documents.
- Prepares and tries cases in state and federal courts defending state agencies and employees.
- Provides legal advice, counsel, and assistance to state agencies; performs analyses of complex factual and legal issues; develops evidence through interviews, depositions, and discovery; prepares and files briefs in appellate courts.
- Provides excellent client service and collaborates effectively with other attorneys and staff.
- Prepares for and performs moderately complex duties of lead counsel in specific subject areas.
- Performs related work as assigned and maintains relevant knowledge to perform essential job functions.
- Attends work regularly following the agreed-upon schedule and ensures the security and confidentiality of sensitive information.
- Complies with all agency policies and procedures, including ethics and integrity.
Education and Experience Information:
- Education: Graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor (.).
- Experience: Minimum of four years of full-time experience in civil litigation or closely related fields as a licensed attorney.
- Licensed as an attorney by the State of Texas and in good standing with the State Bar of Texas, eligible to practice law in Texas by the start date.
- Knowledge of laws and legal principles relevant to the General Litigation Division.
- Skills in handling multiple tasks, prioritizing, meeting deadlines, effective communication, exercising sound judgment, and decision-making.
- Ability to receive and respond positively to constructive feedback, work cooperatively in a professional office environment, provide excellent customer service, and work in person at the assigned work location.
- Ability to arrange personal transportation for business-related travel and work more than 40 hours as needed, in compliance with FLSA.
- Ability to lift and relocate 30 lbs. and travel (including overnight travel) up to 20%.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Four years of litigation experience in civil rights, constitutional law, employment law, education law, and health care law.
- Experience in trying at least two jury trials to a verdict in state and/or federal district court.
- Exceptional academic credentials.
- Participation in Law Review and/or post-graduation judicial clerkship.
Salary Information:
- Salary (Pay Basis): $11, - $12, Monthly
- Overtime Status: Exempt
