Job Title: Civil Rights Attorney
Job Responsibilities:
- Independently manage a caseload of civil rights cases from inception to resolution, encompassing investigation, pleadings, discovery, and trial.
- Conduct detailed legal research and craft effective legal arguments to support the client's position.
- Prepare and argue motions, including dispositive motions and motions in limine.
- Represent clients in court during hearings, mediations, and trials, serving as first-chair trial counsel.
- Depose parties, witnesses, and experts, and prepare expert witnesses for trial testimony.
- Collaborate with other attorneys and support staff to develop comprehensive case strategies.
- Maintain strong relationships with clients, ensuring regular communication and compassionate legal guidance.
- Identify and pursue opportunities for systemic change through impactful litigation or settlement outcomes.
Education and Experience Information:
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
- Active license to practice law in Michigan.
- Minimum of 7 years of litigation experience, with at least 2 years focused on civil rights or constitutional law.
- Proven trial experience, including first-chair or significant participation in jury trials.
- Deep understanding of civil rights laws, including federal statutes like Section 1983, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act.
- Strong legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills.
- Ability to manage multiple cases and deadlines effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience working with vulnerable populations and a demonstrated commitment to social justice.
- Familiarity with electronic discovery processes and tools.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience litigating cases involving police misconduct, wrongful convictions, or systemic discrimination.
- Established relationships with civil rights organizations, advocacy groups, or experts in the field.
- Appellate experience is a plus.
Salary Information:
- Competitive salary based on experience, ranging from $150,000 to $200,000, plus significant success bonus potential.
