Deputy City Solicitor

Job Responsibilities:
The Deputy City Solicitor will serve as a strategic and civic-minded legal professional within the Law Department. The role involves providing legal advice and counsel to a range of departments, boards, and commissions on issues such as contract negotiation, ordinance development, and public policy. The Deputy City Solicitor will have the following responsibilities:
- Lead and supervise a team of four attorneys, offering mentorship and guidance to ensure high-quality legal services.
- Engage in legal work that includes administrative hearing representation, advice and counsel, and complex legal drafting and negotiating.
- Serve as a trusted legal advisor, impacting the daily lives of Worcester’s residents and the future direction of the community.
- Manage sensitive legal matters with discretion and offer sound judgment.
- Serve as a visible legal presence within city government, balancing legal acumen with diplomacy, analytical thinking with interpersonal skills, and precision with pragmatism.
- Attend evening meetings and work beyond standard business hours as needed.

Education and Experience Information:
Candidates must possess a Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school and be a member of the Massachusetts Bar in good standing. A valid motor vehicle driver’s license is also required. The position requires a minimum of five years of related advice and counsel experience, with a preference for municipal law experience. Prior experience in supervising or consulting with attorneys is essential. Candidates should have strong knowledge of municipal law, land use, and contract drafting and negotiating.

Salary Information:
The salary for the Deputy City Solicitor position is in the range of $120,000 to $140,000 annually, plus benefits, vacation, and a pension plan. There is an option for one day per week remote work following an evaluative period, with four days required in the office.
