Job Title: Income Tax Senior Manager, State and Local Tax
Job Responsibilities:
A STS Tax Experienced Manager in State and Local Taxation is tasked with advising clients on the tax implications of their business decisions, recommending alternative strategies, and identifying various methods for tax compliance. The role involves marketing, networking, and business development within the individual's area of expertise and recognizing and applying changes in tax policy to ensure compliance. The STS SALT Senior Manager collaborates with Core Tax Partners, Directors, and Senior Managers to provide state and local tax (SALT) expertise to clients.
Key duties include:
1. Research:
- Identify complex situations requiring research, outline issues, and determine the appropriate research sources.
- Analyze researched facts and sources before composing detailed reports of findings.
- Develop relationships with in-state and out-of-state Department of Tax/Department of Revenue personnel.
2. Tax Compliance:
- Conduct detailed reviews of tax returns, identifying significant state tax issues.
- Compose responses to notices from state taxing authorities.
- Provide assistance with exam support.
3. Tax Consulting:
- Draft tax memorandums, opinions, and other documentation on various tax issues.
- Apply state tax consulting sub-specialties and consult with other STS professionals as needed.
- Determine tax planning processes and ensure engagement letters are adopted and managed.
- Develop consultative selling strategies and manage client expectations.
4. Tax Controversy:
- Represent clients before tax authorities on contested issues.
5. Tax-Related Software:
- Utilize GoSystems, tax research databases, and other tax-related software for task completion.
6. Tax Specialization:
- Provide technical client service to multi-state companies with SALT issues.
- Negotiate settlements, voluntary disclosure agreements, and state tax audit representation.
- Draft technical memoranda regarding SALT issues.
7. Accounting for Income Taxes – SFAS109:
- Prepare tax accrual workpapers.
8. ASC740-10:
- Understand and apply industry standards, firm policies, and **Members Only** Tax Quality Manual requirements related to FAS 109, FIN48, and FAS5 for sales tax and unclaimed properties.
9. Strategy Development:
- Review tax implication studies to identify alternative actions to benefit clients.
- Develop new or improved ideas to advance client, firm, or personnel positions through tax reduction or non-tax benefits.
- Research potential tax strategies and suggest marketing approaches for new client acquisition.
10. Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Supervise the workload of STS SALT Managers, Senior Associates, and Associates on engagements and review work products.
- Train STS SALT Managers, Senior Associates, Associates, and Interns on relevant tax software.
- Evaluate the performance of STS SALT Managers, Senior Associates, and Associates, assisting in professional development.
- Deliver periodic performance feedback and complete evaluations for STS SALT Managers, Senior Associates, Associates, and Interns.
- Act as a Career Advisor to STS SALT Managers, Senior Associates, and Associates.
Education and Experience Information:
- Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or other relevant fields required.
- Master’s degree in Accounting/Taxation or . preferred.
- Experience:
- Eight-plus years of prior experience in state and local/multistate tax experience required.
- Experience supervising tax professionals on a project or engagement basis required.
- Experience preparing and/or reviewing tax provisions preferred.
- Experience with corporate taxation, consolidations, and partnerships preferred.
License/Certifications:
- CPA certification or other relevant certification preferred.
Software:
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel and Word preferred.
- Familiarity with standard tax applications and research tools preferred.
