**Job Title: Consumer Protection Attorney**

**Job Responsibilities:**
The Consumer Protection Attorney, serving as a Deputy Attorney General IV, is tasked with enforcing and upholding the rights of consumers in California by investigating and prosecuting violations of state laws that prohibit false advertising and unlawful, unfair, or fraudulent business practices. This role involves high-profile and complex litigation that often has a nationwide impact. Key areas of focus include:
- Addressing unfair and deceptive practices targeting vulnerable populations such as immigrants, the elderly, servicemembers, and veterans.
- Handling matters related to predatory lending, debt collection, consumer financial issues, for-profit schools, student lending, tenant protection, and consumer privacy rights.
- Prosecuting civil and criminal consumer protection cases, drafting amicus briefs, reviewing legislation and regulations affecting consumers, and engaging in consumer education and advocacy.

Typical duties include:
- Litigating at trial and appellate levels in state and federal courts.
- Conducting in-depth investigations and legal research.
- Negotiating and drafting settlement and restitution plans.
- Collaborating with local law enforcement, attorneys general in other states, and state and federal agencies in joint investigations and actions.
- Drafting consumer education materials and proposing legislation.

**Education and Experience Information:**
- The position requires active membership in The California State Bar.
- Applicants should possess a minimum of six years of legal experience in the practice of law, with at least one year at a level equivalent to Deputy Attorney General III or higher.
- Experience with complex litigation, exceptional writing and research skills, and persuasive oral advocacy are essential.
- The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated interest in consumer protection or public interest and experience in consumer protection and privacy laws or financial products and services.

**Salary Information:**
- The salary for a Deputy Attorney General IV ranges from $11, to $15, per month.
- The classification qualifies for a “Hire Above Minimum" (HAM) salary, with new-to-state candidates hired at the starting salary of the classification.
- Salary details for other related classifications:
- Deputy Attorney General III: $10, - $14, per month.
- Deputy Attorney General: $7, - $11, per month.

The job offers a hybrid work environment, providing the opportunity to work remotely or in-office most days, with some in-office attendance required for court appearances, meetings, or other operational needs. The position is located in the Division of Public Rights, Consumer Protection Section, and may be filled in San Francisco, Oakland, Los Angeles, or San Diego.
