Job Responsibilities:
The Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) in the Criminal Division of the United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Texas is tasked with enforcing federal laws and prosecuting a wide array of criminal activities. These include violations related to illegal immigration, violent crime, narcotics trafficking, organized crime, financial litigation, firearms, public corruption, asset forfeiture, and white-collar crime. As an AUSA, one will engage in frequent courtroom appearances, manage a fast-paced and varied caseload, and work collaboratively with other AUSAs, support staff, and investigative agencies. The role requires a commitment to the Department of Justice's mission of enforcing federal law, defending the interests of the United States, seeking just punishment for the guilty, and ensuring the impartial administration of justice for all Americans. Responsibilities will grow and assignments will become more complex as the AUSA gains training and experience.

Education and Experience Information:
Applicants for the AUSA position must possess a Juris Doctor (.) degree and be an active member of the bar in any . jurisdiction. A minimum of one year of . legal or relevant experience is required. Preferred qualifications include strong academic credentials, superior legal research and writing skills, quick analytical ability, high-volume courtroom experience, and a demonstrated commitment to professionalism, ethics, civility, and public service. Experience with grand jury practices, investigative and prosecution techniques, and first-chair jury trials is desirable. Successful candidates should be computer proficient, capable of conducting their own legal research and writing, and self-sufficient in preparing day-to-day correspondence and pleadings.

Salary Information:
The salary for the Assistant United States Attorney position is administratively determined based on the number of years of professional attorney experience. The basic pay range is between $76,800 and $195,100, which includes a % locality pay. Additional benefits offered by the Department of Justice include paid vacation, sick leave, holidays, life insurance, health benefits, and participation in the Federal Employees Retirement System. Relocation expenses are not authorized for this position.

Additional Information:
The position is based in Laredo, Texas, and requires . citizenship. The initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication, which includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation. The position may require occasional travel, with an average of one to five nights per month. The appointment is initially made on a 14-month temporary basis, pending favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
