Job Title: Administrative Law Judge

Job Responsibilities:
The Administrative Law Judge operates under general supervision and is responsible for conducting quasi-judicial hearings, prehearings, and settlement conferences. The position involves issuing decisions that include findings of fact, conclusions of law, and orders. The judge is expected to rule on procedural motions, manage a full caseload with self-direction, and maintain a record for appeal purposes. It is essential for the incumbent to have extensive knowledge of administrative law and rules of evidence, as well as the ability to maintain decorum in adversarial proceedings.

Education and Experience Information:
Applicants must be currently licensed to practice law in the state of Wisconsin and must be in good standing with the State Bar of Wisconsin before the application deadline. Qualified applicants should have experience in the following activities:
- Researching, analyzing, and interpreting different areas of law
- Writing legal documents, including motions, briefs, or legal memoranda
- Speaking publicly or in forums on legal topics

Additionally, well-qualified candidates may have experience conducting legal research, analysis, and/or writing as part of a tribunal, which can include interning or clerking for a tribunal. Education or training in administrative law and/or the administration of due process is beneficial. Experience appearing as an attorney or decision-maker in legal proceedings involving administrative law and/or due process is advantageous. Experience providing legal advice related to correctional law and serving as a legal representative in hearings or disputes involving individuals on probation, parole, extended supervision, etc., is also desirable. Experience serving as a decision-maker in a tribunal is an added advantage.

Salary Information:
The classification for this position is assigned to pay schedule/range 09-75, with an annual starting salary ranging from $95, to $117,, depending on qualifications, plus excellent benefits. A 12-month probation period may be required. Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the Wisconsin State Compensation Plan at the time of hire.

Additional Information:
This role is based within the **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***., specifically within the Madison Corrections Unit. The department is a quasi-judicial, independent entity tasked with conducting high-quality, impartial, independent, and cost-efficient hearings that serve customer agencies and citizens of Wisconsin. The division manages hearings for fifteen state agencies and is available for other agencies upon request. The position may allow for a hybrid remote/in-office work schedule, up to 50% remote, after up to six months of training, as determined by the supervisor.

The Department of Administration will conduct background checks on all applicants prior to selection. The department does not sponsor work visas, and all hired individuals must verify their identity and eligibility to work in the United States. All employees are expected to live and work in Wisconsin.

Applicants who meet the initial resume and cover letter screening qualifications will be required to complete a timed, written assessment. Notifications regarding eligibility status and invitations to complete the assessment will be sent by HR to eligible candidates. This recruitment may be used to fill other Administrative Law Judge positions within the next six months.
