Job Title: Tax Senior, State and Local Tax
Job Responsibilities:
The Tax Senior, State and Local Tax, is tasked with applying industry knowledge and experience to provide clients with advice related to the tax implications of their business objectives. This includes recommending alternative courses of action and identifying different methods for complying with tax regulations. The role involves understanding potential tax issues, evaluating and selecting alternative actions to minimize tax burden and compliance costs, recognizing potential risks, identifying changes in tax policy, applying new policies to tax compliance, and handling routine questions from federal or state agencies. The Tax Senior serves as the primary contact for clients, preparing and presenting presentations to clients and potential clients.
Key duties include:
Research:
- Identifying when research is needed, framing issues to be researched, and analyzing facts and authorities.
- Demonstrating an in-depth understanding of various tax authorities.
- Applying firm and professional standards for the preparation of WTA and tax returns.
- Developing and maintaining relationships with Department of Tax/Department of Revenue personnel.
Tax Compliance:
- Ensuring clients comply with all applicable authorities while minimizing their tax and reporting burdens.
- Tracking availability and filing requirements of client-related information.
- Utilizing tax compliance knowledge with accuracy and efficiency.
- Developing services in accordance with SOX rulings and managing engagements.
- Conducting detailed reviews of tax returns and identifying issues throughout the engagement.
- Communicating with clients to gather information and preparing/reviewing taxability matrices for client transactions.
Tax Consulting:
- Developing, recommending, and implementing methods to maximize client benefits by decreasing taxes.
- Interpreting existing and new law and client facts to maximize benefits.
- Involving other state tax sub-specialty subject matter experts when appropriate.
- Applying work plans for tax consulting projects and ensuring compliance with firm policy.
- Providing assistance with exam support and managing client expectations.
Tax Controversy:
- Reviewing assessment notices and monitoring client expectations regarding issues of controversy.
- Handling routine questions from federal or state agencies.
Tax Related Software:
- Utilizing GoSystems, tax research databases, and other tax-related software in completing tasks.
- Training staff on current software tools.
Tax Specialization:
- Developing an in-depth understanding of technical and practical issues regarding one or more areas of taxation.
- Managing specialization services efficiently and involving firm specialists when necessary.
- Organizing and conducting internal CPE training sessions.
Accounting for Income Taxes – SFAS109:
- Reviewing basic tax provisions.
ASC740-10:
- Applying firm policies regarding FAS 109 and FIN 48.
- Assisting others in learning and applying FAS 109 and FIN 48.
- Reviewing tax provisions and communicating with Assurance counterparts.
Strategy Development:
- Introducing and developing new or improved ideas to advance client positions.
- Reviewing tax implication studies and assisting with research and implementation of tax strategies.
- Building client relationships, marketing, networking, and business development.
- Providing technical client service to multi-state companies with state and local income/franchise tax issues.
- Assisting with state and local income/franchise tax planning, consulting, and audit representation.
- Managing projects economically and productively, including billing and accounts receivable responsibilities.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Supervising work assignments of STS SALT Associates.
- Providing periodic performance feedback and participating in annual performance evaluations.
- Acting as a mentor and assisting in the professional development of STS SALT Associates.
Education and Experience Information:
Education:
- Bachelor's degree required.
- Master's degree in Accounting/Taxation or . preferred.
Experience:
- Two or more years of state and local/multistate experience required.
License/Certifications:
- CPA certification or other relevant certification preferred.
Software:
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel and Word, preferred.
- Ability to use standard tax applications and research tools preferred.
