Job Title: Law Clerk

Job Responsibilities:
Law Clerks at the organization will engage in various activities under the supervision of staff attorneys. Their responsibilities include conducting client interviews and preparing initial case statements, preparing clients for trials, obtaining discovery and other evidence, writing briefs and other legal memoranda, and participating in community outreach and education. Law Clerks will also assist self-represented litigants, represent clients at administrative hearings and state court hearings/trials, participate in broader impact litigation, and draft writs of mandamus to Superior Court and California appellate court. Additionally, clerks will assist in providing wrap-around support for clients whose legal issues affect their health, particularly within the Medical Legal Partnership (MLP) in Contra Costa and Alameda.

Education and Experience Information:
Applicants must have completed the first year of law school to be eligible for the clerkship program. A passion for social justice and poverty-related issues is essential, along with a sensitivity to working with people from diverse backgrounds. While not required, students who have completed the Evidence Course are encouraged to become certified by the California State Bar to represent clients in court. Proficiency in languages such as Spanish, Cantonese, Russian, Vietnamese, or other Southeast Asian languages is desirable. Special consideration is given to students with a demonstrated commitment to serving low-income or disadvantaged communities.
