Job Title: Fall Semester Law Clerk
Job Responsibilities:
- Conduct client interviews and prepare initial case statements.
- Prepare clients for trials and obtain discovery and other evidence.
- Write briefs and other legal memoranda.
- Participate in community outreach and education.
- Assist self-represented litigants.
- Represent clients at administrative hearings and state court hearings/trials.
- Participate in broader impact litigation.
- Draft writs of mandamus to Superior Court and California appellate court.
- Meet with clinic attendees to provide information about tenant rights and the unlawful detainer (eviction) process.
- Provide legal information and assist with necessary forms, including Answers to Unlawful Detainers, rent board petitions, and demand letters to landlords for repairs.
Education and Experience Information:
- Completion of the first year of law school is required.
- A passion for social justice and poverty-related issues is essential.
- Sensitivity to working with people from diverse backgrounds is necessary.
- Students who have completed the required Evidence Course are encouraged to become certified by the California State Bar to represent clients in court.
- Proficiency in Spanish, Cantonese, Russian, Vietnamese, or other Southeast Asian languages is encouraged.
- Special consideration is given to students with a demonstrated commitment to serving low-income or disadvantaged communities.
Salary Information:
- Students are encouraged to apply for funding through their law school and other grant opportunities.

- Applications for the 2025 fall semester clerkship are accepted on an ongoing basis.
- BayLegal offers a hybrid remote/in-person work environment for Fall 2025.
- Substantive training is provided on a rolling basis.
