Position Summary
A reputed firm, a Center for Independent Living, is seeking a mission-driven General Counsel to provide legal guidance and support across the organization. This role ensures compliance with applicable laws and regulations, supports risk management, and advises on matters related to disability rights, contracts, employment law, and nonprofit governance. The General Counsel will work closely with leadership and program teams to uphold the organization’s values and protect its legal interests.
Job Responsibilities
- Provide legal advice and counsel to the Board of Directors and senior leadership.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws, including the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 504, and other disability-related legislation.
- Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, MOUs, and other legal documents.
- Advise on employment law matters, including policies, investigations, and employee relations.
- Support risk management and assist in developing internal policies and procedures.
- Represent the organization in legal proceedings or coordinate with external counsel as needed.
- Monitor changes in laws and regulations affecting nonprofit organizations and disability services.
- Provide training to staff on legal and compliance topics.
- Maintain legal records and documentation.
Education and Experience Information
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
- Licensed to practice law in Missouri and Kansas and in good standing.
- Minimum 3–5 years of legal experience, preferably in nonprofit, disability rights, or employment law.
- Strong knowledge of laws affecting people with disabilities and nonprofit organizations.
- Excellent analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a mission-driven environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with or within Centers for Independent Living or disability advocacy organizations.
- Personal or professional experience with disability.
- Familiarity with grant compliance and nonprofit governance.
Work Environment & Physical Demands

Salary Information
Pay: $190,000 - $250,000 per year
