Job Overview:
A Washington, law firm with a prominent intellectual property practice is seeking a seasoned Patent Attorney to support its expanding docket in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and medical device technologies. The role offers an opportunity to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team handling a diverse array of patent matters, from application drafting to strategic portfolio development, within a dynamic and cross-functional legal environment. This position is being recruited on behalf of the firm by a specialized legal recruitment agency.
Duties:
Draft and file . patent applications in the life sciences domain
Conduct patentability analyses for innovations in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and medical technologies
Prosecute . patent applications and oversee coordination with foreign associates for international filings
Participate in intellectual property due diligence and freedom-to-operate assessments
Manage and advise on the strategic development and maintenance of global patent portfolios
Perform legal and technical research to support IP protection strategies
Collaborate with internal legal teams, external clients, and business stakeholders on patent-related initiatives
Act as liaison between internal departments and outside counsel regarding IP issues
Requirements:
At least 4 years of substantive experience in patent prosecution
Prior work in a law firm or in-house legal environment with a focus on life sciences technologies
Proficiency in . patent law and familiarity with international IP frameworks
Demonstrated ability to translate complex scientific concepts into strategic patent applications
Effective interpersonal skills and the ability to contribute to collaborative teams
Education:
Doctoral degree (.) in a life sciences discipline
Certifications:
Admission to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), or eligibility to sit for the Patent Bar
Active membership in a State Bar in good standing
Skills:
Deep understanding of biotech and pharmaceutical innovations
Familiarity with scientific literature and emerging industry trends
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Detail-oriented with excellent organizational and analytical abilities
Experience in mechanical or electrical patent prosecution is considered a plus
