Job Title: Senior Counsel, Product and Privacy

Job Responsibilities:
- Serve as the primary legal advisor for product and engineering teams, establishing scalable and effective review processes throughout the product development lifecycle, from ideation to launch, while balancing user experience and compliance considerations.
- Implement, maintain, govern, and provide regular guidance and training on the company’s open source policies and practices and the requirements of its Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC).
- Assist product owners with data mapping and documenting data privacy impact and AI risk assessments, records of processing activities, updating risk registers, and developing risk mitigation plans as needed.
- Champion privacy within the business by incorporating privacy-by-design and privacy-by-default concepts into product roadmaps, and provide and maintain related training and self-service materials for product and engineering teams.
- Lead the legal and compliance arm of the company’s SDLC program, ensuring periodic updates to account for regulatory changes and industry best practices through active participation with product reviews and go-live approvals, and providing counsel as needed to remediate deviations from the SDLC.
- Maintain all open source guidelines and policies to reflect both approved and disapproved license types and use cases, research and provide guidance for new licenses, and coordinate risk mitigation strategies for any identified violations of the company’s open source policies and procedures.
- Research, analyze, train, and provide legal direction to internal stakeholders on legal, regulatory, and compliance issues, including emerging product security and privacy issues impacting company products, and develop appropriate compliance strategies.
- Support the development and communication of product strategies regarding product technology, features, security safeguards, applicable SDLC processes, privacy-by-design, and data governance to empower business stakeholders to communicate company positions internally and externally.
- Stay updated on relevant state, federal, and international laws and regulations pertaining to privacy, product, AI, cybersecurity, and data governance.
- Maintain or oversee the maintenance of program documentation, including open source credits page, privacy and product FAQs, AI Fact Sheets, customer-facing trust pages, internal guidance on product and AI governance, and the repository of customer questionnaire responses.
- Lead compliance efforts with respect to global privacy and data security laws and other product-related regulations and industry standards, including supporting global security operations with a focus on cloud offerings.
- Support go-to-market launch for product offerings through the creation and maintenance of associated governance documents, contract templates, policies, procedures, and reporting requirements related to product, privacy, and AI.
- Provide ongoing strategic and tactical advice to the product and engineering organizations to minimize legal risks while advancing business interests.

Education and Experience Information:
- JD from a top law school; member of at least one state bar in good standing.
- Minimum of 8 years active practice in a legal counsel advisory role; minimum of 6 years direct experience in a full-time, in-house product counseling capacity with significant hands-on privacy counseling experience.
- Strong technical background and significant hands-on experience advising engineering and product teams on privacy and product-related regulatory and compliance matters, including open source code and incorporating privacy and security into the SDLC.
- In-house experience with a global technology or telecommunications company is strongly preferred.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Legal project management experience.
- Experience guiding cross-functional teams on privacy and product matters pertaining to technology platforms is highly valued.
- A basic understanding of software engineering practices, terms, and concepts is desired.
- IAPP Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP) or willingness to complete such certification within a reasonable time following hire.
- Strong understanding of terms, concepts, and regulatory considerations for the development and deployment of AI technologies.
- Skilled at using ChatGPT to develop and implement means of creating business efficiencies and maximize time spent on high-value initiatives.

Salary Information:
- The base salary range for this role is between $180,000 - $250,000, factoring in locations such as New York, California, Texas, DC, North Carolina, and Florida.
- Final compensation will be determined by various factors such as relevant work experience, education, certifications, skills, and geographic location.
- In addition, there may be eligibility for other compensation, such as a bonus.
