Job Title: Legal Intern

Job Responsibilities:
1st Year Students:
- Conduct traditional legal research and prepare memoranda.
- Draft pleadings and briefs for filing with administrative bodies, district courts, and appellate courts.
- Organize files for criminal, district court, or administrative proceedings, including identifying legal and factual issues, conducting related research, and collaborating with attorneys.
- Work with lawyers during hearing preparation and attend hearings if possible.
- Conduct research in connection with drafting proposed administrative rules or laws.
- Observe appellate arguments and participate in mock arguments when possible.
- Attend hearings, trials, depositions, and client meetings, contingent on interest and availability.
- Draft administrative rulings.

2nd Year Students:
- Participate in all the activities described for 1st-year students.
- Engage in hearings and arguments under the supervision of a lawyer as part of a clinical program.

Education and Experience Information:
- Unpaid internships are available for 1st and 2nd-year law students.
- Internships are offered during the academic year and summer.
- The Office collaborates with law schools at the University of Iowa, Drake University, and other law schools outside the state to ensure interns receive the best experience possible and appropriate academic credit.

Subject Matter Areas:
Internships are available in various divisions including:
- Licensing and Administrative Law Division
- Area Prosecutions Division
- Consumer Protection Division
- Criminal Appeals Division (for 2nd-year students)
- Human Services Division
- Environmental Law Division
- Revenue Division
- Special Litigation Division
- Prosecuting Attorneys Training Coordinator
- Office of Consumer Advocate (Utilities)

Agency Counsel Division:
- Interns interested in administrative law, agency litigation, and related appeals will represent Iowa state agencies, boards, and commissions.
- The division defends state agencies in both state and federal courts and pursues administrative and civil remedies against state law violators.
- Work includes legal research, substantive writing, and potential participation in court and administrative hearings and meetings with senior state officials.
- Areas of practice include environmental law, policing law, state contracting, professional regulation and discipline, construction, and transportation law.

Salary Information:
- Internships are unpaid.
