Job Responsibilities:
The Assistant Corporation Counsel in the Affirmative Litigation Division is responsible for representing the City of New York in a diverse array of federal and state cases where the City acts as a plaintiff. The role involves advancing key policy interests, safeguarding the City's financial resources, and handling claims related to its operations. Specific responsibilities include managing inter-governmental disputes, addressing municipal corruption, handling public health cases, managing products liability and insurance coverage issues, resolving commercial disputes, protecting tenants, enforcing civil aspects of the Administrative Code, and dealing with property damage claims. The Senior Counsel will lead litigation teams, manage caseloads independently, and engage in creative problem-solving to resolve cases effectively. Additionally, the role requires excellent interpersonal, writing, and oral advocacy skills, advising clients, negotiating settlements, and litigating cases in both state and federal courts.
Education and Experience Information:
Candidates must be admitted attorneys with a minimum of 10 years of litigation experience. The position requires substantial experience in advising clients, negotiating settlements, and litigating in state and federal courts. Experience as a plaintiff in litigation is preferred, along with a commitment to public service. Prior government experience is also preferred. Candidates should possess the ability to lead litigation teams and manage challenging matters independently.
Salary Information:
The salary range for this position is $132, to $182,.
Additional Information:
The **Members Only** offers a potential opportunity for remote work through two programs. The first allows for limited and irregular remote work, while the second is a Citywide pilot program permitting two set remote workdays each week, contingent on division approval and coverage needs. Participation in the pilot program requires setting one remote work location, and attorneys must attend in-person responsibilities such as court appearances and client meetings on remote workdays if needed. The position is eligible for federal loan forgiveness programs and state repayment assistance programs. Residency in New York City is not a requirement for this position.
