Job Title: Chief Court Attorney
Job Responsibilities:
Chief Court Attorneys serve in a confidential capacity, responsible for supervising a law department with eight or more Court Attorneys, including Principal Court Attorneys and/or Court Attorneys-Referee, in courts serving a population exceeding 400,000. Responsibilities include:
- Screening candidates for attorney positions.
- Assigning legal research tasks and evaluating completed work.
- Developing policies and procedures and issuing guidelines for implementation.
- Analyzing and preparing written interpretations of statutes and rules.
- Researching and analyzing complex legal issues and questions and preparing confidential memoranda.
- Drafting confidential opinions.
- Conferring with Justices, Law Clerks, Law Department staff, and practicing attorneys on unusual or complex proceedings.
- Reviewing legal documents filed in connection with such proceedings.
- Making assignments, reviewing work products, and developing policy.
- Overseeing all law department operations.
Education and Experience Information:
- Admission to the New York State Bar.
- Three years of service in the Associate Court Attorney title; or
- Eight years of relevant legal experience gained after admission to the New York State Bar.
Salary Information:
- Base Salary: $145,103
- Location Pay: $4,920

The position is classified as exempt/confidential. The responsibilities outlined above describe the general nature and level of work performed by individuals assigned to this title. The duties do not encompass all job duties performed by employees in the title, and every position may not require these duties. The appointee may be subject to reassignment to any position in the same title within this promotion unit, depending on the needs of the Unified Court System.
