Job Title: Attorney Interne

Job Responsibilities:
The Attorney Interne position within the Department of Social Services Office of Legal Affairs involves several key responsibilities aimed at supporting the Department and ensuring compliance with legal standards. The primary duties include:

- Representing the interests of the Commissioner of the Department of Social Services in New York State Family Court litigation. This involves establishing paternity and securing orders of support for children who are beneficiaries of public assistance.
- Appearing in estoppel hearings and trials, seeking penalties for violations of support petitions, and handling matters concerning medical orders of support, modifications, and violations of orders for children receiving Medicaid.
- Providing legal counsel and conducting reviews related to negotiated settlements on arrears owed to the Commissioner. This includes stipulating to orders of support outside court, based on initiatives and pilot programs run by the Office of Child Support Services.
- Performing legal research on family law topics, drafting standard motions, and preparing rebuttals.
- Drafting legal documents and offering legal assistance by researching statutes, case law, and other materials to resolve legal issues, interpret laws, and understand the legal implications of rules and regulations related to the delivery of social services.
- Maintaining case files, updating notes in the case management system, and tracking case status.
- Determining the advisability of presenting witnesses, assessing the admissibility of evidence, and developing legal strategies.
- Traveling as needed and potentially being reassigned to other boroughs within New York City.

Education and Experience Information:
The minimum qualifications for the Attorney Interne position are:

- Graduation from an accredited United States law school, as defined in the Rules of the New York Court of Appeals (Sections or ), or admission to the New York State Bar.

Preferred Skills:
- Prior litigation experience.
- Strong oral and written advocacy skills.
- Experience in Child Support or Family Law.
- Successful completion of all sections of the New York Bar Exam.
- Admission to the New York Bar.

Salary Information:
The salary for the Attorney Interne position is stated as $70,228 for new hires, with a range extending up to $80,763.

Additional Information:
The position is based in the Bronx and requires full-time commitment from Monday through Friday, 9 am to 5 pm, with flexible scheduling available. No exam is required for this non-competitive classification role. The position is open to entry-level candidates, and New York City residency is not a requirement.
