Job Title: Supervising Attorney for Mental Health, Assigned Counsel Plan
Job Responsibilities:
- Provide legal assistance, case consultation, and expert referral guidance to panel attorneys handling cases involving mental health issues.
- Work collaboratively with other ACP Supervising Attorneys to monitor case activity and ensure attorney adherence to best practices.
- Maintain cooperative and supportive relationships with relevant personnel in state and city agencies, as well as with community-based stakeholders.
- Coordinate with ACP Supervising Attorneys for Training to provide Continuing Legal Education (CLE) focusing on laws and issues pertinent to representing clients with mental health concerns.
- Oversee panel attorneys’ participation in problem-solving courts and provide guidance on the effective utilization of these courts.
- Instruct attorneys in developing psychological defenses and provide them with relevant case law and trial strategies.
- Direct attorneys on the effective employment of forensic and mitigation experts.
- Guide attorneys through navigating Criminal Procedure Law (CPL) 730 and Mental Hygiene Laws.
- Respond to concerns from clients, community members, and staff.
- Represent the Assigned Counsel Plan (ACP) at citywide and statewide coalition meetings, task forces, and working groups concerning mental health initiatives.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the office.
Education and Experience Information:
- Admission to the New York State Bar is required.
- A minimum of four years of recent full-time responsible and relevant legal experience subsequent to admission to any bar is required.
- At least eighteen months of experience must include supervision of other attorneys in an administrative, managerial, or executive capacity, or performing highly complex and significant legal work.
- Incumbents must maintain membership in good standing with the New York State Bar for the duration of employment.
Salary Information:
- The salary range for this position is $66, to $175,.
