Job Title: Paralegal, Correctional Law Section
Job Responsibilities:
Under the supervision of a Supervising Deputy Attorney General, the paralegal will undertake a diverse array of responsibilities. These include reviewing legal documents in both new and class-action cases and assisting attorneys in acquiring evidentiary documents from the client agency, Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. The role involves contacting client agencies for factual information, interviewing witnesses, and occasionally visiting prisons to review records. The paralegal will also perform routine legal research and draft basic court pleadings and declarations. Additionally, they will coordinate pretrial discovery requests, implement automated litigation support systems, and prepare documents for the opening and closing of files for internal administrative purposes and for notifying the client agency. The incumbent will support litigation efforts by providing attorneys with trial support using software such as Relativity, Concordance, Case Map, Trial Director, and TrialPad. The ability to travel is required for this position.
Education and Experience Information:
The position is classified under Senior Legal Analyst, Legal Analyst, and Legal Assistant. Candidates must meet the minimum qualifications stated in the classification specification. Those using education to meet the minimum qualifications must submit a copy of their transcript or diploma. Unofficial transcripts may be accepted during the application process, but official transcripts or a diploma must be submitted prior to appointment. The job is open to individuals currently in the classification, eligible for lateral transfer, reinstatement, list or LEAP eligibility, or those in the process of obtaining list eligibility. SROA and Surplus candidates are given priority consideration.
Salary Information:
The salary range for the Senior Legal Analyst classification is $6, - $7, per month. Consideration will also be given to candidates in the Legal Analyst ($5, - $6, per month) and Legal Assistant ($4, - $5, per month) classifications.
Additional Information:
- This is a hybrid position with the opportunity to work remotely or in the office, requiring 2-4 in-person days each month. Travel and in-person attendance may be necessary for trials, court appearances, witness interviews, depositions, and as needed operationally.
- The position is located in the Division of Civil Law, Correctional Law section and may be filled in Sacramento, San Francisco, San Diego, or Los Angeles.
- A fingerprint check is required for this position.
- All new-to-state employees will receive the minimum salary of the classification, while current state employees or those with reinstatement rights will have their salary determined in accordance with applicable laws, rules, and regulations.

- Desirable qualifications include knowledge of federal and state court procedures, legal research and writing skills, good oral communication skills, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work under time and workload pressures. Initiative and creativity in designing new programs and methods of organization, as well as knowledge or willingness to learn computer skills and advanced technology in legal workload management, are also valued.
