Job Title: Assistant Corporation Counsel - Appeals

Job Responsibilities:
The Assistant Corporation Counsel position is situated within the Appeals Division of the department. The primary responsibilities include handling appeals that originate from nearly all of the department's litigating divisions and preparing amicus briefs in cases that involve the City's interests. Attorneys in this role are tasked with appearing before federal and state appellate courts, as well as briefing and arguing appeals across a variety of cases. These cases can range from administrative law and constitutional issues related to enforcement measures against illegal cannabis sales to broader subjects that arise from the governance of a large municipality. The role involves dealing with both routine litigation and complex appeals that present cutting-edge legal questions and significant public policy issues. The position offers a unique perspective on the City's operations and allows attorneys to engage in high-level appellate practice while contributing to legal developments that impact the City. Attorneys will work both independently and collaboratively with supervisors, trial attorneys, client agencies, and executive staff to manage a substantial number of appeals each year.

Education and Experience Information:
Candidates must have graduated from an ABA-accredited law school and be a member in good standing of the New York State Bar, or be in the process of gaining admission. While prior appellate experience from practice or through an appellate clerkship is preferred, it is not a mandatory requirement. The role requires excellent writing, research, and analytical skills, as the mission is to provide outstanding appellate advocacy on behalf of the City.

Salary Information:
The salary range for this position is $87, to $175,.

Additional Information:
After completion of orientation, attorneys have the opportunity to work from home under one of two programs. The first option allows for remote work on a limited and irregular basis, while the second option is a Citywide pilot program that permits participants to select two set days to work from home each week, subject to division approval and coverage needs. If in-person responsibilities arise on a designated work-from-home day, attorneys must attend to those duties in person. Participants in the pilot program must designate one work-from-home location. This program is currently under testing Citywide to assess its effectiveness.
