Law Internship

Job Responsibilities:
The law internship offers students the opportunity to gain practical experience by participating in an unpaid internship during their Fall or Spring semesters or Summer break. Interns will be assigned to various Bureaus or supporting Units and Offices within the Division of Criminal Justice. Responsibilities include:

- Observing and assisting Detectives and Deputy Attorneys General in their daily duties, which may include appearances before the Law Division (Criminal Part), Appellate Division, and occasionally, the New Jersey Supreme Court.
- Participating in the Brown Bag Lunch Program where Detectives and Deputy Attorneys General share knowledge on investigations, substantive law, and litigation techniques.
- Engaging in a mock trial program designed for all interns.
- Undergraduate interns will focus on investigative aspects related to criminal law violations, enhancing their studies in Criminal Justice or related fields.
- Law interns will delve into various substantive areas of New Jersey criminal law, requiring strong legal research and writing skills.

Education and Experience Information:
- Open to undergraduate, graduate, and law students.
- Undergraduate interns are expected to be studying Criminal Justice or related forensic or technical fields.
- Law interns must demonstrate excellent legal research and writing capabilities.
- All interns must possess outstanding interpersonal communication skills.

Application Requirements:
- Submit a completed Internship Application, cover letter, resume, and most recent official transcript.
- Law students must also provide a legal writing sample.
- Applicants should express their area of interest and any geographical preferences on the Division of Criminal Justice website.
- A Confidential Background Investigation Clearance Form must be completed if offered a position in the program.

Salary Information:
The internship is unpaid.

Additional Information:
- The internship is supervised by a Detective or Deputy Attorney General, depending on whether the intern is an undergraduate or law student.
- Interns will have the opportunity to work at various locations, including the Richard J. Hughes Justice Complex and other offices in New Jersey.
- The application deadline for the Fall Session is May 31. Applications should be submitted via email, and no duplicate copies are required by mail.
