Job Title: Assistant Corporation Counsel - Appeals

Job Responsibilities:
The Assistant Corporation Counsel in the Appeals Division is responsible for handling appeals originating from nearly all of the Law Department's litigating divisions. This role involves preparing amicus briefs in cases that implicate the City’s interests. Attorneys in this position appear before federal and state appellate courts, where they are tasked with briefing and arguing appeals in a variety of cases. These cases may include administrative law and constitutional issues, such as enforcement measures concerning illegal cannabis sales, as well as a diverse range of other subject matters. These can range from routine litigation related to the governance of a large municipality to complex appeals involving advanced legal questions and significant public policy issues.

The Assistant Corporation Counsel will work independently and collaboratively with supervisors, trial attorneys, client agencies, and executive staff. The role involves briefing and arguing a significant number of appeals each year, providing a unique perspective on the City's operations and an opportunity to engage in high-level appellate practice. The position also involves contributing to legal developments that impact the City and gaining knowledge about City government and new areas of law.

After completing orientation, attorneys have the opportunity to participate in one of two work-from-home programs. The first option allows for limited and irregular remote work, while the second is a Citywide pilot program allowing two set days of remote work per week, subject to division approval and coverage requirements. Attorneys must attend in-person responsibilities on remote work days if necessary.

Education and Experience Information:
Candidates must have graduated from an ABA-accredited law school and be a member in good standing of the New York State Bar or be in the process of being admitted. The role requires excellent writing, research, and analytical skills. While prior appellate experience from practice or through an appellate clerkship is preferred, it is not a requirement.

Salary Information:
The salary range for the position is $87, – $175,.
