Job Responsibilities
As a Senior Attorney, the primary responsibilities involve providing "in-house counsel" advice to program managers, which may include preparing pleadings, planning litigation strategies, and drafting legislation, rules, and regulations. The role also requires analyzing legal opinions, briefs, and other materials, performing legal research and analysis, drafting or reviewing contracts, and preparing opinions and memoranda of law. Additionally, the attorney may appear at administrative tribunals or courts.
Education and Experience Information
The position may be filled at different levels depending on the qualifications of the candidate:
- Assistant Attorney 1: Requires law school graduation or other eligibility to take the NYS Bar Examination, with a starting salary of $66,951.
- Assistant Attorney 2: Requires admission to the NYS Bar, with a starting salary of $74,193.
- Assistant Attorney 3: Requires one year as an Assistant Attorney 2 or admission to the NYS Bar and one year of subsequent professional legal experience, with a starting salary of $82,326.
- Senior Attorney: Requires one year as an Assistant Attorney 3 or admission to the NYS Bar and two years of post-licensure professional legal experience, with a starting salary of $96,336.
Candidates must have one year of permanent competitive or 55 b/c service in a title designated as appropriate for transfer in accordance with Section , , or of the Civil Service law. For transfer candidates, one year of permanent competitive service in a position allocated to a SG-16 or higher is required, along with possessing a bachelor’s degree and having standing on the Legal Specialties exam list.
Salary Information
The salary range for this position is from $66,951 to $121,413 annually. Location pay will be included for positions filled Downstate and in the Mid-Hudson Region.
Additional Information
This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). For the duration of the program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, meaning no examination is required, but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications for the title for which they apply. Employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status within one year of permanent appointment, without having to compete in an examination.
