Job Title: Spring 2026 Legal Intern

Job Responsibilities:
Legal interns at the Office of the Iowa Attorney General are expected to contribute significantly to the operations and vitality of the office. Their responsibilities include:

1. For 1st Year Law Students:
- Conduct traditional legal research and draft memoranda.
- Draft pleadings and briefs for filing with administrative bodies, district courts, and appellate courts.
- Organize files for criminal, district court, or administrative proceedings, which includes spotting legal and factual issues, conducting related research, and collaborating with attorneys in charge.
- Participate in hearing preparations and hearings when possible.
- Engage in research connected to drafting proposed administrative rules or laws.
- Observe appellate arguments and attend "mock arguments" when feasible.
- Attend hearings, trials, depositions, and client meetings based on interest and availability.
- Draft administrative rulings.

2. For 2nd Year Law Students:
- In addition to the responsibilities listed above, 2nd-year students in a clinical program can participate in hearings and arguments under the supervision of a lawyer.

Education and Experience Information:
- The legal internships are available to 1st and 2nd-year law students.
- The Office collaborates with the University of Iowa, Drake University, and other law schools to ensure interns receive an enriching experience and appropriate academic credit.

Subject Matter Areas:
- Internships are available in various divisions, including Licensing and Administrative Law, Area Prosecutions, Consumer Protection, Criminal Appeals (for 2nd-year students), Human Services, Environmental Law, Revenue, Special Litigation, Prosecuting Attorneys Training Coordinator, and the Office of Consumer Advocate (Utilities).

Specific Division Highlight:
- Human Services Division: Interns in this division will support the Assistant Attorneys General with a range of issues including Child Welfare, Medicare, Gun Restoration Rights, and Juvenile Appeals. Interns will engage in legal research, brief writing, and practical court experiences to support the attorneys in this expansive and diverse division.

Salary Information:
- The internships are unpaid.

- Interested students must submit a cover letter, resume, and transcript (when available) to AG Human Resources.
- Selection decisions are made on a rolling basis.
