Job Title: Attorney Interne
Job Responsibilities:
The Attorney Interne position within the Department of Social Services' Office of Legal Affairs involves providing legal representation and support in the New York State Family Court to establish paternity and child support orders for children receiving public assistance. Under the supervision of a senior attorney, the responsibilities include:
- Representing the Commissioner of the Department of Social Services in Family Court litigation to establish paternity and support orders.
- Participating in estoppel hearings and trials, and seeking penalties for violations of support petitions.
- Handling matters related to medical orders of support, modification of orders, and violations for children on Medicaid.
- Providing legal counsel and negotiating settlements on arrears owed to the Commissioner, and stipulating to support orders outside of court.
- Conducting legal research on family law issues and drafting standard motions and rebuttals.
- Drafting legal documents and assisting the Office of Child Support Services by researching statutes and case law to resolve legal questions.
- Maintaining case files and updating the case management system with case status notes.
- Deciding on the advisability of presenting witnesses, admissibility of evidence, and legal strategy.
- Traveling and potentially being reassigned to other boroughs within New York City as needed.
Education and Experience Information:
The minimum qualifications for the Attorney Interne position include:
- Graduation from an accredited . law school as per the New York Court of Appeals Rules (Sections or ) or admission to the New York State Bar.
Preferred skills include:
- Prior litigation experience.
- Strong oral and written advocacy skills.
- Experience in Child Support or Family Law.
- Successful completion of all sections of the New York Bar Exam.
- Admission to the New York Bar.
Salary Information:
The salary range for the Attorney Interne position is between $70,228 and $80,763. The salary should at least start from the new hire rate through the minimum incumbent rate for non-managerial titles.

- The position offers potential eligibility for federal loan forgiveness and state repayment assistance programs for prospective employees of the City of New York.
