Job Title: Senior Manager, Accounting Methods
Job Responsibilities:
The Senior Manager in the Accounting Methods group plays a crucial role in helping companies optimize their federal tax accounting methods, covering areas such as IRC 263(A) capitalization, depreciation accounting methods, expense acceleration, and revenue deferral. This role is part of the Specialized Tax Services (STS) within the company, which is designed to assist companies in complying with federal, state, and international tax laws. The Senior Manager's responsibilities include:
1. Research:
- Identifying situations requiring research and conducting investigations.
- Confirming the accuracy of facts and sources.
- Preparing studies on tax implications and providing alternative actions to clients.
- Composing research memos supporting projects/transactions.
- Developing presentations for marketing and sales opportunities.
2. Tax Compliance:
- Ensuring clients comply with applicable tax authorities.
- Identifying options to minimize client tax and reporting burdens.
- Communicating risks in "gray areas" to partners.
- Completing workpapers and tax return forms.
- Meeting firm risk management and tax quality control standards.
- Communicating with clients and appropriate personnel regarding issues.
3. Tax Consulting:
- Developing and implementing solutions for maximum tax benefits.
- Staying informed of legal and factual developments affecting tax accounting methods.
- Identifying process improvements for STS Accounting Methods.
4. Tax Controversy:
- Representing clients before tax authorities.
- Responding to inquiries from federal and state tax authorities.
5. Tax Specialization:
- Developing an understanding of issues regarding tax accounting methods.
- Identifying opportunities and issues related to tax specializations.
6. Strategy Development:
- Developing ideas and strategies to advance client, firm, or personnel positions.
- Suggesting marketing approaches for new client acquisition.
7. Marketing and Business Development:
- Exhibiting thought leadership in Tax Accounting Methods.
- Working with various partners and managers to execute marketing plans.
- Preparing proposals, statements of work, and engagement letters.
- Researching tax topics related to transfer pricing.
- Drafting tax alerts and creating presentations for internal and external audiences.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Supervising and reviewing the work of Senior Associates and Associates.
- Ensuring team members are well-trained in required areas.
- Evaluating performance and assisting in goal development.
- Delivering performance feedback and evaluations.
- Acting as a Career Advisor to team members.
Education and Experience Information:
Education:
- Required: Bachelor’s degree.
- Preferred: Degree in Accounting, Tax, or Finance; Master’s degree; Juris Doctorate (.).
Experience:
- Required: Seven or more years of Federal tax client service experience; prior experience supervising tax consulting professionals.
- Preferred: Experience with accounting methods, preparing/reviewing tax provisions, corporate taxation, consolidations, and partnerships.
License/Certifications:
- Required: CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a . jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (EA) or equivalent.
Software:
- Preferred: Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel and Word; experience with tax-related software and research databases like Caseware, GoSystems, etc.
Other Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Knowledge and skills in tax accounting methods commensurate with experience.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Superior analytical and research skills.
- Solid organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines.
- Ability to manage a team and delegate assignments.
- Ability to build strong relationships with firm and client personnel.
- Executive presence and ability to act as primary ,500, with similar ranges for Maryland, NYC/Long Island/Westchester, and Washington DC.
