Job Title: Assistant Attorney General I
Job Responsibilities:
- Represent the State of Texas in judicial and administrative family law proceedings to establish paternity, obtain court orders for financial support and health care coverage for children, and enforce and modify child support orders.
- Participate in administrative hearings on behalf of the State of Texas.
- Provide legal advice, consultation, and technical assistance to the Child Support Program.
- Develop and deliver training related to legal proceedings and child support.
- Maintain relevant knowledge necessary to perform essential job functions effectively.
- Attend work regularly in compliance with the agreed-upon work schedule.
- Ensure security and confidentiality of sensitive and/or protected information.
- Comply with all agency policies and procedures, including those pertaining to ethics and integrity.
- Perform related work as assigned.
Education and Experience Information:
- Must have graduated from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor (.) degree.
- Must be licensed as an attorney by the State of Texas and in good standing with the State Bar of Texas.
- Must be eligible to practice law in Texas by the start date.
- Knowledge of Family Law and the Texas Family Code is required.
- Skills needed include legal writing, mediation, negotiation, serving as a trial lawyer, preparing sound opinions, conducting investigations, and performing legal research.
- Experience with using a personal computer for word-processing and data entry/retrieval.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks, prioritize, and meet deadlines.
- Effective oral and written communication skills are essential.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment and make effective decisions.
- Must be able to receive and respond positively to constructive feedback.
- Ability to work cooperatively with others in a professional office environment.
- Commitment to providing excellent customer service.
- Must be able to work in person at the assigned work location and perform all assigned tasks at the designated workspace within the office.
- Must be able to arrange for personal transportation for business-related travel.
- Ability to work more than 40 hours as needed and in compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
- Ability to lift and relocate 30 lbs.
- Ability to travel, including overnight travel, up to 25%.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Two years of experience in handling Family Law cases.
- Jury trial experience.
- Experience in handling a high-volume legal practice.
- Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking Spanish.
Salary Information:
- Salary is set at $6, per month.
This position is based in any Texas city with an OAG Child Support Division office and requires collaboration with relevant stakeholders throughout the state. Some travel to and from El Paso and other worksites throughout the state for in-person meetings will be necessary. The role offers the opportunity to gain significant trial court experience, develop skills in negotiating agreed court orders, and become subject-matter experts in many practice areas of family law, all while enjoying a healthy work-life balance and engaging in camaraderie with colleagues across the state.
