Job Responsibilities:
As a Senior Attorney, the role encompasses a variety of legal assignments which include providing "in-house counsel" advice to program managers, preparing pleadings, planning litigation strategies, drafting legislation, rules, and regulations, analyzing legal opinions, briefs, and other materials, conducting legal research and analysis, drafting or reviewing contracts, preparing opinions and memoranda of law, and appearing at administrative tribunals or courts. This position requires the ability to handle complex legal matters and offer guidance on legal issues to various departments within the organization.
Education and Experience Information:
The position can be filled at different levels depending on the candidate’s qualifications:
- Assistant Attorney 1: Requires Law School Graduation or eligibility to take the NYS Bar Examination with a starting salary of $66,951.
- Assistant Attorney 2: Requires admission to the NYS Bar with a starting salary of $74,193.
- Assistant Attorney 3: Requires one year as Assistant Attorney 2 or admission to the NYS Bar and one year of subsequent professional legal experience, with a starting salary of $82,326.
- Senior Attorney: Requires one year as an Assistant Attorney 3, or admission to the NYS Bar and two years of post-licensure professional legal experience, with a starting salary of $96,336.
Candidates may also qualify through one year of permanent competitive or 55 b/c service in a title designated as appropriate for transfer under specific sections of the Civil Service law. For transfer candidates, one year of permanent competitive service in a position allocated to a SG-16 or higher, a bachelor’s degree, and standing on the Legal Specialties exam list are required.
Salary Information:
The salary range for this position is from $66,951 to $121,413 annually. The starting salary will depend on the candidate's qualifications and the level at which they are hired. Location pay will be included for positions filled downstate and in the Mid-Hudson Region. New State employees appointed to graded positions will start at the hiring rate of the position, and promotion salaries are determined by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law and negotiated union contracts.
Additional Information:
The position is full-time with a contingent permanent appointment type and falls under the competitive class jurisdiction. The work schedule is Monday through Friday, from 9 AM to 5 PM, with a total of hours per week. There is no mandatory overtime, flextime, or compressed workweek allowed, but telecommuting is an option. The position is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS), allowing for non-competitive appointments without requiring an examination, provided candidates meet the minimum qualifications. Employees hired under this program are expected to have their non-competitive status converted to competitive status within one year.
