Job Title: Directing Attorney-Workers’ Rights
Job Responsibilities:
The Workers’ Rights Directing Attorney plays a pivotal role in leading the organization's Workers’ Rights Practice. This position reports directly to the Executive Director and encompasses a wide range of responsibilities, including:
- Overseeing direct legal services, which involves designing and implementing systems for effective case management, quality control, and data tracking.
- Training, mentoring, supervising, and fostering the professional development of a diverse team that includes attorneys, advocates, volunteers, and interns.
- Collaborating with other members of the workers’ rights practice to develop and advance program strategies.
- Partnering with the organization’s Litigation Director to identify cases and oversee workers’ rights litigation, ensuring effective handling of employment class actions, multi-plaintiff wage and hour cases, and discrimination lawsuits.
- Managing an independent caseload that involves limited and full-scope legal representation for low-wage workers experiencing wage theft, discrimination, retaliation, and other workplace rights violations.
- Assisting the Executive Director as part of the Senior Management Team in the growth and development of the organization, including participation in strategic projects that support organizational priorities.
- Supporting budgeting and fundraising efforts, which include preparing the annual budget and managing grant applications and reports.
- Strengthening the administrative infrastructure of the program to ensure relevant and efficient protocols are in place.
- Tracking, analyzing, and reporting data on program metrics, such as case and outreach deliverables.
- Maintaining and enhancing relationships with worker centers and other community partners to provide technical assistance, legal education, outreach, and direct legal services.
- Leading collaborative efforts with local, regional, and state partners on policy initiatives, funding, and strategic litigation efforts.
- Serving as a media contact and expert spokesperson for the organization’s workers’ rights practice as needed.
Education and Experience Information:
The position requires the following qualifications:
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree, with admission and good standing with the California Bar.
- A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in employment law or direct legal services, with a preference for candidates with over 8 years of experience.
- Substantial experience with Berman hearings, plaintiff-side employment litigation, and mediation is strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated strong leadership skills and experience managing legal services staff.
- Fluency in Spanish is preferred.
- Excellent writing, research, analytical, and verbal communication skills are essential.
- Proven ability to work cooperatively on projects with lawyers, other staff members, and diverse community organizations.
- Knowledge of and adherence to community and movement lawyering principles.
- A demonstrated commitment to civil liberties, workers’ rights, and public interest law.

Salary Information:
The position is a full-time, exempt role with a competitive salary that is commensurate with experience, ranging from USD $108,914 to $119,369 per year.

COVID-19 Policy:
