Thompson Coburn, a leading full-service law firm with offices in eight cities across the ., is seeking a full-time exempt Risk Management Counsel to join their team. The Risk Management Counsel will play a vital role in providing guidance to firm attorneys and staff on risk management and loss prevention issues. This includes ensuring compliance with rules of professional conduct, implementing best practices for client intake and conflicts checking procedures, and identifying and resolving potential conflicts of interest for new clients and matters. The ideal candidate will have excellent organization and time management skills, as well as the ability to work in a fast-paced environment. This is a primarily remote position, with occasional in-office presence for training, meetings, and as needed at the request of the firm. Hybrid options are available for candidates who live near an office location.
Responsibilities:
- Become the firm expert on all aspects of new client intake and conflicts clearance
- Develop and implement best practices for new client intake and conflicts of interest processes
- Prepare and ensure compliance with firm policy for engagement letters and conflict waivers
- Clear conflicts for new hires, including employees and partners
- Clear conflicts for new clients and matters
- Work closely with firm General Counsel to resolve risk management and loss prevention issues
- Conduct legal research on loss prevention issues as needed
- Report incidents and claims to the firm's malpractice carrier
- Issue ethical wall implementation communications
- Conduct in-house training sessions for attorneys and staff on intake and conflict procedures
- Stay updated on best practices for loss prevention and make suggestions for revisions and adoption
- Clear conflicts for firm mergers and lateral attorney acquisitions
- Review and analyze outside counsel guidelines and identify key terms
- Review external marketing materials for compliance with ethics rules
- Maintain the accuracy of the conflicts database
- Coordinate review and approval of Business Associate Agreements and Subcontractor Business Associate Agreements for HIPAA compliance
- Work closely with firm General Counsel to analyze professional liability policies
Requirements:
- Thorough understanding of conflicts rules in private law practice
- Familiarity with ethics and conflicts of interest rules in jurisdictions where the firm practices
- Ability to acquire close working knowledge of loss prevention guidelines provided by the firm's insurance carrier
- Technical proficiency in relevant technology used by the firm and Risk Management Department
- Ability to analyze ethical and professional liability issues and recommend solutions
- Self-directed and proactive, able to spot opportunities and take action
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to maintain effective working relationships
- Willingness to travel as needed
- Flexibility and adaptability as an exempt employee to meet time demands of the position
- Strong critical thinking skills to handle routine and complex assignments
- Ability to work regular hours, as coordinated with Senior Director of Risk Management, and occasionally outside of normal business hours
Experience and Education:
- . degree with 2+ years of practice experience in a private law firm environment
- Prior experience with ethics and conflicts of interest rules strongly preferred
- Prior experience with Intapp workflow platforms strongly preferred
- Licensed to practice law and member in good standing
