Job Responsibilities:

The Summer Student Volunteer position at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) offers law students an opportunity to engage in substantive legal work that allows them to demonstrate their writing, analytical, and advocacy skills. Interns are assigned to various divisions or offices within the organization, where they assist with a range of tasks that contribute to the Commission's work. The specific responsibilities of a legal intern may vary based on the division or office to which they are assigned. Some of the key responsibilities include:

- Conducting research and analysis on market issues and legislative proposals.
- Drafting memos, public statements, and legal memoranda.
- Reviewing and analyzing evidence in ongoing investigations.
- Assisting attorneys in preparing investigative testimony, depositions, and discovery.
- Examining and assessing the adequacy of self-regulatory and rule enforcement programs.
- Collaborating with staff in preparing briefing memoranda and presentation materials for international meetings.
- Assisting in meetings and discussions with external stakeholders and drafting related summaries and analysis.

Education and Experience Information:

To qualify for this volunteer internship position, candidates must meet the following educational and experience requirements:

- Candidates must be law students currently enrolled and in good standing as a . or candidate in an ABA-accredited law school.
- Applicants must have completed at least one year of law school by the requested start date.
- Students must be actively enrolled (at least part-time) in an accredited college or university.
- A law school transcript must be submitted to demonstrate eligibility.
- Candidates must maintain student status throughout the internship and be actively enrolled at an accredited 4-year college or university.

Salary Information:

This is an unpaid internship position, and volunteers are not eligible to receive agency benefits. The internship offers valuable experience and contributes to educational and professional growth, which may be applied in future employment endeavors in both the public and private sectors.

Additional Information:

- The CFTC is seeking non-paid volunteers to encourage interest in public service careers and provide valuable work experience.
- Interns may work during the school year and/or during summer or school vacation periods.
- The nature of the volunteer assignment and work schedule will be established once the intern is on-board.
- Students seeking course credit for externship positions are responsible for coordinating in advance with their educational institution.
