Job Title: Agency Attorney L2 for the Housing Litigation Division (HLD)
Job Responsibilities:
As an Agency Attorney L2 for the Housing Litigation Division (HLD) within the Office of Enforcement and Neighborhood Services (OENS), the selected candidate will undertake various legal responsibilities to enforce housing standards in New York City. The key responsibilities include:
- Serving as a Staff Attorney litigating cases on behalf of the organization's Office of Enforcement and Neighborhood Services to enforce the NYC Housing Maintenance Code and NYS Multiple Dwelling Law in the Housing Part of New York City Civil Court, and occasionally in NYS Supreme Court.
- Executing difficult and involved negotiations on behalf of the organization.
- Researching and preparing complex briefs, motions, legal opinions, affidavits, memoranda, and other legal documents, and arguing them before Housing Court.
- Preparing for and conducting trials, which includes preparing witnesses and documentary evidence.
- Advising on legal aspects related to the enforcement and administration of acts, rules, laws, and regulations concerning housing standards.
Education and Experience Information:
The minimum qualifications for the position of Agency Attorney L2 require:
1. Admission to the New York State Bar.
2. One year of satisfactory United States legal experience subsequent to admission to any state bar, or six months of satisfactory service as an Agency Attorney Intern (30086).
For assignment to Assignment Level (AL) II, candidates must have one year of experience at Assignment Level I or two years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in areas of law related to the assignment. For assignment to AL III, candidates must have two years of experience in Assignment Levels I and/or II or three years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in areas of law related to the assignment.
Preferred Skills:
- Membership in good standing with the New York State Bar.
- Knowledge of NYC Housing Maintenance Code and NYS Multiple Dwelling Law.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with PC software such as Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word.
- Familiarity with the organization’s internal databases, including the Litigation Management System (LMS) and HPDINFO.
Salary Information:
The salary range for the position is $95,.
Additional Information:
- The position may be eligible for remote work up to 2 days per week, as part of the Remote Work Pilot Program agreed upon between the City and Local 237.
- New York City residency is not required for this position.
