Job Title: Housing Attorney – Group Representation

Job Responsibilities:
The housing attorney will join a team focused on combating gentrification, displacement, social disenfranchisement, and structural injustice. The attorney will engage in affirmative litigation before housing, state, and federal courts, as well as administrative agencies. Key responsibilities include:

- Collaborating with neighborhood organizations, tenant associations, and community organizers primarily in Brooklyn and/or Queens.
- Representing low-income tenant associations against landlords seeking to harass or vacate residents.
- Defending individuals and families facing eviction.
- Assisting low-income tenant co-ops in reinforcing and sustaining themselves.
- Representing community institutions facing closures due to market pressures and displacement.
- Engaging in fair housing litigation and combating systemic housing discrimination.
- Conducting Know Your Rights workshops, clinics, and educational efforts to inform tenants of their protections under housing laws.
- Participating in neighborhood advocacy to stop tenant harassment, displacement, and residential segregation.
- Engaging in citywide dialogues and contributing to the organization’s housing advocacy and legal strategy.

Education and Experience Information:
Applicants must meet the following qualifications:

- Admission to the bar of the State of New York or eligibility for admission.
- Experience in civil litigation practice or substantially similar experience. Housing litigation experience is preferred but not required.
- Cultural competence demonstrated through residence or employment in communities served by the organization.
- Excellent legal writing, litigation, and advocacy skills.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work with individuals in crisis.
- Ability to work independently, manage a high caseload, track case data, and meet deadlines.
- Computer proficiency to review and generate materials, track client information, prepare grant reports, attend meetings, and perform related tasks.
- Fluency in Spanish, Mandarin, Korean, or any language commonly spoken in Brooklyn and Queens is preferred but not required.

Salary Information:
The salary for the housing attorney position will be based on years of relevant experience, with a pay scale ranging from a minimum of $73,742 to a maximum of $125,612. The position offers excellent health and other benefits. The role is hybrid, requiring three days in the office.
