Job Title: Tax Manager, Exempt Organizations
Job Responsibilities:
A Tax Manager within the Exempt Organizations Tax Services (EO) practice at the company holds a significant leadership position in a specialized national team dedicated to addressing the unique needs of tax-exempt clients. The EO team is known for its collaborative approach, combining in-depth industry knowledge with tax technical expertise to deliver tailored solutions that assist organizations in fulfilling their compliance obligations and achieving strategic objectives.
The role involves serving a diverse range of tax-exempt clients, including healthcare, higher education, private foundations, trade associations, and social service agencies. The work extends beyond tax return compliance, as the manager acts as a long-term advisor and strategic partner to clients, helping them navigate complex areas such as unrelated business income (UBI), executive compensation, intermediate sanctions, public support analysis, charitable giving, and the evolving regulatory landscape.
Key responsibilities include:
Client Service & Technical Expertise:
- Managing the preparation and review of IRS Forms 990, 990-T, 990-PF, and state filings for exempt organizations
- Advising clients on complex tax issues specific to exempt organizations, such as unrelated business income tax (UBIT), public support tests, intermediate sanctions, and charitable contribution substantiation
- Interpreting and applying tax law to unique nonprofit issues and staying current on developments impacting the exempt sector
- Collaborating with other company practice groups to provide integrated solutions to clients
Engagement Management:
- Overseeing all phases of the engagement process, including planning, execution, quality review, and billing
- Ensuring the delivery of high-quality, timely work within budget and scope expectations
- Building and maintaining strong client relationships, acting as the primary point of contact for assigned engagements
Leadership & Development:
- Supervising, coaching, and mentoring staff and senior associates; providing timely and constructive performance feedback
- Identifying and supporting training and development opportunities for team members
- Contributing to business development through proposal writing, client presentations, and participation in thought leadership or speaking engagements
Practice Growth:
- Assisting in growing the EO practice by identifying opportunities to expand services to existing clients and supporting the acquisition of new clients
- Developing internal best practices and tools to enhance group effectiveness and efficiency
- Participating in the company’s national EO strategy development and implementation
Education and Experience Information:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field is required
- An active CPA or JD license is required
- 5+ years of tax experience in public or industry with an exempt organization background
- Strong understanding of Form 990, 990-T, and 990-PF and related exempt organization tax issues
- Demonstrated project management, organizational, and leadership skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines
Preferred qualifications include:
- Proficiency with tax software such as CCH, 990 Tracker, or similar platform
- Experience with Alteryx
- A Master’s in Taxation or . in Tax is a plus
Salary Information:
The wage range for this role considers a wide range of factors involved in making compensation decisions, including skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The disclosed range estimate has not been adjusted for the applicable geographic differential associated with the location where the position may be filled. At the company, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role, and compensation decisions depend on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current range is $84, - $201, per year.
