Job Title: Deputy District Attorney IV
Job Responsibilities:
- Perform a variety of professional legal work involved in criminal prosecution, including investigation, trial preparation, and legal research.
- Evaluate evidence and facts from reports filed by law enforcement officers or petitioners to determine the nature of crimes committed and authorize issuances of criminal complaints.
- Interview prospective witnesses and develop cases for prosecution.
- Prepare trial briefs and engage in trial practice.
- Present and prosecute cases before County courts and the Grand Jury.
- Represent the people of the County at arraignments, preliminary hearings, and trials.
- Negotiate with defense attorneys regarding the disposition or modification of charges.
- Present opening statements, interrogate and cross-examine witnesses, argue points of law, and make final arguments or summations.
- Conduct legal research and prepare briefs and opinions.
- Train and advise lower-level attorneys in the preparation and presentation of cases.
- Supervise and direct the preparation and presentation of the appeal of cases when necessary; perform specialized legal research and direct special projects.
Education and Experience Information:
- Active membership and in good standing with the State Bar of California is required at the time of hire. This status must be maintained to remain employed in this classification.
- Deputy District Attorney II: Requires one year of criminal trial experience as an attorney, or two years of trial experience as an attorney.
- Deputy District Attorney III: Requires two years of criminal trial experience as an attorney, or three years of trial experience as an attorney.
- Deputy District Attorney IV: Requires three years of criminal trial prosecution experience as an attorney, or four years of trial experience as an attorney.
- Five years of criminal trial prosecution experience as an attorney are needed for incumbents to qualify for promotion or be terminated.
Salary Information:
- Salary Range for Deputy District Attorney IV: - Hourly, $5, - $7, Biweekly, $12, - $16, Monthly, $150, - $201, Annually.
- Salary for Deputy District Attorney II: $109,116 - $120,452 Annually.
- Salary for Deputy District Attorney III: $126,464 - $139,568 Annually.
- Additional assignment incentive of $77 per pay period ($2002 annually) may be available for candidates assigned to the Victorville or Joshua Tree offices.
- A 3% planned salary increase is effective February 2026, contingent upon assessed values for the previous fiscal year.

- Positions may be assigned to any location within the County based on department needs.
- Candidates must successfully pass an extensive background investigation, which may include a credit check, fingerprint check, and medical exam.
