JOB TITLE: LAW CLERK II

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Law Clerk II is responsible for providing comprehensive legal support to judges within the Circuit Court of Cook County. Key responsibilities include:

- Assisting judges in resolving matters before the court and during courtroom proceedings.
- Conducting thorough research and analysis of legal issues based on statutes and case law for brief or argument preparation.
- Searching and studying legal records, documents, and laws to gather information and provide applicable analysis for cases under consideration.
- Preparing written memoranda and summaries based on research and analysis of legal issues.
- Assisting in the drafting and proofreading of opinions, administrative and judicial orders, professional correspondence, public information documents, and court rules.
- Consulting with judges regarding the interpretation and application of law to issues and cases.
- Monitoring pending legislation as needed.
- Assisting outside counsel with litigation involving judges or court employees as parties.
- Handling other miscellaneous matters as required by judges or supervisors.
- Maintaining confidentiality while performing duties.
- Performing additional duties as assigned.

These duties are not exhaustive and may be expanded or adjusted according to the needs of the department.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE INFORMATION:
Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree and a Juris Doctor degree. An active license to practice law in Illinois is required. However, law school graduates who are not yet licensed may be considered, with the expectation that they obtain licensure by the Illinois Supreme Court and remain in good standing within one year of employment.

Candidates must demonstrate:

- Knowledge of methods of legal research and analysis of applicable law.
- Experience with computer applications for word processing, spreadsheet, database, and legal research/writing.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills and organizational abilities.
- Ability to work collaboratively with legal and non-legal personnel in a professional and collegial manner.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to sit at a desk for long periods in front of a computer screen.
- Ability to intermittently twist to reach equipment or supplies around the desk.
- Perform simple grasping and fine manipulation.
- Strength to lift files weighing up to 20 pounds.
- Use the telephone and computer keyboard on a daily basis.

SALARY INFORMATION:
The salary for the Law Clerk II position is $72,292. For law school graduates pending Illinois licensure, the salary is $62,332. Entry-level salary for graduates not yet licensed is currently $56,313.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- This position requires pre-employment drug screening and a criminal background check.
