Senior Law Clerk
Job Responsibilities
Under limited supervision, the Senior Law Clerk will provide support to attorneys representing the State in both state and federal courts. Key responsibilities will include:
- Conducting legal research to support case strategies and courtroom proceedings.
- Preparing briefs, pleadings, memoranda, and other legal documents essential for legal processes.
- Assisting attorneys during courtroom hearings and proceedings, ensuring a smooth flow of legal operations.
- Reviewing and summarizing evidence and exhibits to facilitate case preparation and presentation.
- Supporting junior law clerks by monitoring their caseloads and offering guidance on tasks and assignments.
Education and Experience Information
Candidates must meet one of the following criteria:
1. Be a current law student graduating in December 2025.
2. Be transferring from out of state and preparing for the swearing-in.
3. Be a recent graduate from an ABA-accredited law school awaiting SC Bar results.
Additional requirements include:
- Upon transferring into a permanent Assistant Attorney General position, completion of Rule 403 requirements is necessary.
- Candidates involved in State Grand Jury matters will be sworn to secrecy protocols and required to participate in a random drug testing program.
Preferred qualifications include:
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
- Excellent writing skills and attention to detail.
- Effective communication and advocacy skills.
- Advanced legal research abilities.
- A professional demeanor when interacting with the public and officials.
- Familiarity with relevant laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the work.
The position may require travel and the transport of files. Proficiency in computers, software, and technology, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, and other related tools, is expected. Occasional overnight travel may be necessary, especially during trials or hearings across the State.
Salary Information
The position is classified as unclassified with a pay grade that offers a hiring range with a minimum and maximum of per hour.
Additional Comments
- Drug screening, credit checks, delinquent tax checks, grievance checks, and SLED background checks are required.
