Job Title: Assistant General Counsel

Department: Board of Standards & Appeals

Job Responsibilities:
The Assistant General Counsel plays a vital role under the supervision of the General Counsel at the Board of Standards and Appeals, which is integral to regulating land use, development, and construction in New York City. The responsibilities include:

- Drafting decisions for adoption by the Board.
- Analyzing and identifying complex legal issues, conducting independent research, and preparing legal memoranda.
- Reviewing applications for development projects and appeals related to zoning determinations.
- Meeting with applicants on proposed development projects to provide legal advice on parameters.
- Acting as a liaison with other agencies such as the Department of Buildings and the Law Department.
- Drafting responses to inquiries from applicants and the public.
- Attending all public meetings of the Board.
- Advising staff on agency rules of procedure and other legal matters.
- Performing other legal duties as directed by the General Counsel or Executive Director.

Education and Experience Information:
Minimum Qualifications:

1. Admission to the New York State Bar; and either of the following:
- One year of satisfactory legal experience in the United States after admission to any state bar; or
- Six months of satisfactory service as an Agency Attorney Interne.

Incumbents must remain members in good standing of the New York State Bar throughout their employment.

For assignment to different levels (I, II, III), additional experience requirements apply, including:

- Assignment Level II: One year of experience at Assignment Level I or two years of comparable legal experience in relevant legal areas.
- Assignment Level III: Two years of experience in Assignment Levels I and/or II or three years of comparable legal experience in relevant legal areas.

Preferred Skills:

- Excellent communication, research, and writing skills.
- Ability to work independently on significant projects.
- Experience in land use and zoning.

Salary Information:
The salary range for the Assistant General Counsel position is $71, to $81,.
