Job Description:
- Seeking a dedicated leader to serve as Managing Counsel of the Appeals and Post-conviction Department
- Responsible for mission, vision, planning, strategic direction and management of the department
- Supervises team of 16 staff
- Represents clients in state and federal courts on a variety of appeal and post-conviction issues
- Handles complex cases and coordinates focused attention on identifying and addressing systemic issues
- Works with attorneys and core staff on policy and litigation initiatives and outreach
- Manages department budget and financial resources
- Assists in budget preparation
- Appears in public and private settings to discuss legal matters
- Provides legal advice to county public defenders and members of the private bar
Qualifications:
- Admission to Ohio Bar
- 5 years of experience as a licensed attorney practicing criminal law
- 6 months of experience or training in supervisory principles and techniques
- Eligibility to practice under a Certificate to Practice Law Pending Admission in Ohio or Temporary Certification for Practice in Legal services, Public Defender, and Law School Programs
Supervision and Leadership:
- Supervises and develops staff
- Plans and leads staff meetings
- Reviews and approves work for content and accuracy
- Develops and manages training and education for internal and external audiences
- Communicates office-wide decisions and policies
- Oversees department budget and financial resources
Client Representation and Strategic Representation:
- Represents indigent criminal defendants in state and federal courts
- Handles limited caseload and formulates innovative legal strategy
- Corresponds and meets with clients, including incarcerated clients throughout Ohio
- Reviews and evaluates all case and project work within the department
Salary Information:
- Starting pay at Step 1: $85,758
- Candidates with exceptional qualifications may be considered for higher starting pay
- Pay increases every six months and annually thereafter
